چکیده

New experimental laboratory data are presented on swash overtopping and sediment overwash on a truncated beach, approximating the conditions at the crest of a beach berm or inter-tidal ridge-runnel. The experiments provide a measure of the uprush sediment transport rate in the swash zone that is unaffected by the difficulties inherent in deploying instrumentation or sediment trapping techniques at laboratory scale. Overtopping flow volumes are compared with an analytical solution for swash flows as well as a simple numerical model, both of which are restricted to individual swash events. The analytical solution underestimates the overtopping volume by an order of magnitude while the model provides good overall agreement with the data and the reason for this difference is discussed. Modelled flow velocities are input to simple sediment transport formulae appropriate to the swash zone in order to predict the overwash sediment transport rates. Calculations performed with traditional expressions for the wave friction factor tend to underestimate the measured transport. Additional sediment transport calculations using standard total load equations are used to derive an optimum constant wave friction factor of fw=0.024. This is in good agreement with a broad range of published field and laboratory data. However, the influence of long waves and irregular wave run-up on the overtopping and overwash remains to be assessed. The good agreement between modelled and measured sediment transport rates suggests that the model provides accurate predictions of the uprush sediment transport rates in the swash zone, which has application in predicting the growth and height of beach berms. Sediment transport partitioning in the swash zone of a large - scale laboratory beach

Swash zone sheet flow and suspended sediment transport rates are estimated on a 14 coarse sand beach constructed in a large-scale laboratory wave flume. Three test cases under 15 monochromatic waves with wave heights of 0.74 m and wave periods of 8 and 12.2 s were 16 analyzed. Sediment flux in the sheet flow layer exceeds several hundred kg m s during both 17 uprush and backwash. Suspended sedi...

BeachWin: modelling groundwater effects on swash sediment transport and beach profile changes

Field and laboratory observations have shown that a relatively low beach groundwater table enhances beach accretion. These observations have led to the beach dewatering technique (artificially lowering the beach water table) for combating beach erosion. Here we present a process-based numerical model that simulates the interacting wave motion on the beach, coastal groundwater flow, swash sedime...

Coastal Overwash: Part 2, Upgrade to SBEACH

PURPOSE. This Coastal and Hydraulics Engineering Technical Note (CHETN) provides information about an improved capability to mathematically model overwash caused by elevated water elevation and wave runup. An upgrade to SBEACH (Storm-induced BEAch CHange Model, a numerical model for simulating storm-induced beach profile change) is described to simulate sediment transport and subaerial profile ...

Transport of horseshoe crab eggs by waves and swash on an estuarine beach: Implications for foraging shorebirds

The abundance of horseshoe crab eggs in the swash zone and remaining on the beach after tide levels fall was evaluated to identify how numbers of eggs available to shorebirds differ with fluctuations in spawning numbers of horseshoe crabs, wave energies and beach elevation changes. Field data were gathered 1e6 June 2004 at Slaughter Beach on the west side of Delaware Bay, USA. Counts of spawnin...

Barrier Island Morphology and Sediment Characteristics Affect the Recovery of Dune Building Grasses following Storm-Induced Overwash

Barrier islands are complex and dynamic systems that provide critical ecosystem services to coastal populations. Stability of these systems is threatened by rising sea level and the potential for coastal storms to increase in frequency and intensity. Recovery of dune-building grasses following storms is an important process that promotes topographic heterogeneity and long-term stability of barr...
